Alfa Laval is a leading global supplier of products and solutions for heat transfer, separation and fluid handling. Key products include heat exchangers, separators, pumps and valves.

These illustrations are for Alfa Laval’s marine engineering division and I have been working with Alpaxa AB of Stockholm who build B2B digital solutions including animated interactive calculator apps.

Automated Fuel Changeover System (ACS

Strict regulations by the International Maritime Organisation and other bodies call for ships to change over from heavy fuel oils (HFO) to low-sulphur distillate fuel oils in designated Emission Control Areas.

These two fuel types have very different viscosity, lubricity and combustion characteristics so the ACS process conditions the fuel accordingly before it enters the engine.

This drawing was subsequently animated to show the gradual transition of the fuel types.

PureBallast

Biological organisms are inevitably taken onboard with ballast water. If ballast is discharged in a different location these organisms can have a damaging effect on the local ecosystem.

Pure Ballast uses UV treatment instead of chemicals to disinfect ballast water. A wide variety of configurations are possible so my drawing was designed to work in an interactive calculator showing all the possible variations

Sonihull

Sonihull uses ultrasound to combat biofouling without the use of cleaning chemicals, biocides or mechanical intervention.

In the app, rollovers brought up specific information on the areas where Sonihull provide a benefit. These included hull protection, crossover pipes, sea chests, strainers, propeller shafts, heat exchangers and coolers.

Separator vs Filter Simulator

These drawings were included in a calculator that compared Alfa Laval’s centrifugal separators with a rival company’s filters. In each case, the type of filter or separator can vary as well as their location in the engine room, and the number of each type that is installed.

Not only are Alfa Laval’s products more compact, the consumables (spare parts, seals &c) take up less storage space than cellulose fibre filters which have to be replaced when they become saturated.
